I've just been reading about how you can get satellite network access out in the desert. It centers around having the right equipment and being able to connect up to satellite internet. Coverage varies of course, but there are a number of places around the globe where you can get an Internet connection even if you're nowhere near a phone line.
It's great that you can get this sort of access nowadays; it used to be really hard to stay in touch, but nowadays there just isn't any excuse.
